Fluent is hiring - Software engineer

  • Fulltime, flexible work schedule
  • Hybrid location with 2+ days / week in Cambridge office
  • c. £44,000 plus benefits
  • 3 years + commercial development experience required

We're looking for a software engineer - working across a blend of clientside and serverside technologies. We want to find the right blend of attitude, skills, experience and brains that will help us build web applications that delight our customers.

We need to expand our team to meet growing demand, so we'll consider you as a person and mould the role to fit, rather than being too prescriptive upfront. We'd especially welcome applications from people who may have had non-traditional routes into development or a varied career path that brings fresh perspectives.

About Us

Fluent is a digital product development agency, working on the web in a variety of disciplines to provide creative, clever solutions to tricky business problems. We take pride in getting to the real root of the problem - understanding what our clients want, and delivering what they need.

We're an elegant bunch (believe it or not), at least when it comes to our work. We don't believe in shortcuts, and it's one of the reasons so many of our clients keep coming back to us as their business grows. They know we'll do everything we can to help them thrive.

We care about creating a workplace for Fluenteers to thrive, too. We don’t have a formal management structure - or office politics - we work together in various combinations depending on the technical demands of each project.

Working at Fluent means you’ll enjoy a high-level of autonomy and have the chance to work with a friendly, incredibly accomplished bunch. That alongside a competitive pay and a host of benefits to reflect the work you do.

We have a no long-hours culture and our philosophy is to work smart, so while we get a kick out of doing our job, we value the hours outside of it too.

About you

You are a coder with at least 3 years commercial experience of a mainstream web technology. The ones we use most are .NET MVC, React, Angular, SQL, C#. We'd consider people with similar tech skills who are happy to learn new languages.

You are detail orientated. We’re looking for a craftsperson who cares about code quality, performance and all the tiny touches that combine into the alchemy of a great end result.

You have project and people skills. We’re a small team which means that everyone does a little bit of everything. We like it that way - and hope you will too. That means you’ll need to be a collaborator - ready to communicate with colleagues and clients. You may be working in hybrid teams alongside our clients, or behind the scenes on projects they have entrusted to us.

You are competent in all the supporting activities of developing decent sized projects - unit testing, code reviews, source control, defining and managing cases, build processes, documentation, bug triage. If you are particularly adept in any of these areas then please let us know.

A useful list of bullet points

You should definitely:

  • have at least 3 year's commercial experience developing in a mainstream framework or web stack
  • have in-depth knowledge of at least one part of the stack (e.g. Angular, .NET or SQL) and have working knowledge of the parts that surround it, complement it or are an alternative to it
  • be used to managing code in Git

Bonus points for knowledge of:

  • app development frameworks - such as React Native, Expo or Nativescript
  • DevOps - we use Azure Pipelines, Docker, Kubernetes and similar with our customers
  • CMS applications - in particular, Umbraco
  • working with code migrations and legacy application rewrites

In addition to the above you’ll need to be:

  • educated to degree level
  • legally able to work in the UK
  • able to work at both our office in Histon, Cambridge, and remotely in case of the occasional pandemic. We're still finding our feet with a mixed-mode of working to get the best all-round results for the team however we envisage spending at least 1-2 days per week in the office, more for those who want to

If this sounds like you, we’d love to speak to you.

In return

We can offer:

  • A super friendly team of experienced peers to work with
  • A good work-life balance and a flexible schedule with part time options available
  • A hybrid (part office/part remote) work location
  • A competitive, annually reviewed salary of c.£44,000 depending on your experience
  • 25 days’ holiday a year, plus a flexible bank holiday entitlement
  • Pension contributions, matched by Fluent up to 8%
  • Life insurance based on 4 x annual salary
  • Healthcare plan including dental and optical care for you and your family
  • £200 annual wellbeing contribution
  • Enhanced parental leave policy
  • Regular team lunches and team socials
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • £500 annual learning and development budget
