We’re looking for an experienced digital UX designer to join our growing team at Fluent.

About Us

Fluent is a digital product development agency - helping clients in a diverse range of industries create a positive impact through innovative digital products. From mental health to sustainable transport we’re a multi-disciplined team working together to provide creative, clever solutions to tricky business problems.

We're an elegant bunch (believe it or not), at least when it comes to our work. We don't believe in shortcuts, and it's one of the reasons so many of our clients keep coming back to us as their business grows. They know we'll do everything we can to help them thrive.

We care about creating a workplace for Fluenteers to thrive, too. We don’t have a formal management structure - or office politics - we work together in various combinations depending on the technical demands of each project.

Working at Fluent means you’ll enjoy a high-level of autonomy and have the chance to work with a friendly, incredibly accomplished bunch. That, alongside a competitive pay package and a host of benefits, to reflect the value of the work you do.

We have a no long-hours culture and our philosophy is to work smart, so while we get a kick out of doing our job, we value the hours outside of it too.

Key requirements

Experienced designer

We are looking for a UX/UI designer with at least 3 quality, relevant years of experience, preferably 5, who will contribute to all aspects of design, UX and UI for the products or projects in the UX team’s remit.

You will contribute to work that ensures the client vision is understood and that the product design aligns to that vision delivering a coherent digital experience.

You will join and contribute to client discovery sessions, workshops on topics such as user journeys and UI layouts, through to design reviews.

You should be able to demonstrate proficiency in several (3+) of our core UX design functions (graphic design, UI /UX design, user journey storyboarding, user persona definition, workshops, interviews, surveys, wireframing, prototyping)

Strong project management skills

You will liaise regularly with the project delivery team and of course the engineering team to ensure quality is delivered, timeframes are met and clients are delighted.

You will be able to take a pragmatic approach when required, finding the right balance between a perfect design experience and other constraints such as technology, time, budget and wider business objectives from the client.

Strong communicator

You’ll need to be able to articulate your ideas well - explaining them clearly in written form, verbally, and visualised as prototypes and wireframes. It’s also important to be empathetic and to accept critique gracefully - we learn from each other.

An innovator

With such a wide variety of clients you’ll need to be excited by the idea of quickly diving into new domains of knowledge to gain a deep understanding of a client’s needs. New technologies and new ideas are a fundamental part of how we keep innovating.

Sweating the small stuff

You need to be detail oriented. If you’ve bothered reading this far into the job description, then you should talk to us. We welcome those who read deeper, who are pedantic about the tiny touches that combine into the alchemy of a great end result.

You’ll also need to be able to work in an iterative fashion - refining the details in response to feedback.

You’ll have...

  • Demonstrable end-to-end product design experience
  • A high degree of familiarity with design tools and developer handoff workflows - ideally Figma, Sketch or Adobe XD
  • Experience with producing both prototypes and high-fidelity UI design
  • Proficiency in, and examples of, how you resolve difficult design challenges
  • Clear written and verbal communication style
  • Minimum of 5 years experience
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and practices

Bonus points for…

  • Strong knowledge of front-end implementation - writing and maintaining well written CSS and JS in modern forms (ES6, CSS-in-JS, SASS)

In addition to the above you’ll need to be:

  • Educated to degree level
  • Legal to work in the UK
  • Able to work often at our office in Histon, Cambridge, and remotely in case of the occasional pandemic. We're still finding our feet with a mixed-mode of working to get the best all-round results for the team however we envisage spending at least 1-2 days per week in the office, more for those who want to

In return

In return we can offer:

  • A super friendly team of experienced peers to work with
  • A good work-life balance and a flexible schedule with part time options available
  • A hybrid (part office/part remote) work location
  • A competitive, annually reviewed salary of £46-52,000 depending on your experience
  • 25 days’ holiday a year, plus a flexible bank holiday entitlement
  • Pension contributions, matched by Fluent up to 8%
  • Life insurance based on 4 x annual salary
  • Healthcare plan including dental and optical care for you and your family
  • £200 annual wellbeing contribution
  • Enhanced parental leave policy
  • Regular team lunches and team socials
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • £500 annual learning and development budget
  • 1 day per month learning and development time

How to apply

In addition to your CV tell us a little about yourself: your situation, background and personality. Show us some of the projects you've worked on in the past.

Finally, mention five websites you check regularly and the last book you read (or keep by your pillow with the hope of reading by osmosis).

Please send your stuff to [email protected] We look forward to meeting you.

No agencies, please.
